Back in Black

Phew. The past 2 weeks have had some ups and downs, but I’m finally on the upswing physically! The day before yesterday, I got back in the gym after FIVE REST DAYS (yeah, that should tell you how crappy I was feeling). I just went for a light run and did some technique work on my power cleans. Yesterday I did an at-home Turbofire workout, and today I’m planning to hit the gym for some (lighter than usual) lifting.

Five Things I Enjoyed This Week:

1. My new rice cooker!

With my newfound love for an 80/10/10 macro breakdown, I’ve been eating a LOT of rice and steamed veggies for dinner. I decided to invest in a rice cooker that also steams veggies on top while your cooking your rice. It’s so easy and efficient! And saves lots of money, especially given that I was previously purchasing Trader Joes’ microwaveable brown rice.

2. Simple Breakfast Juices

This week, I blended organic orange juice (yes, pasteurized, but I buy fresh-squeezed when I can find it) with fresh sliced pineapple, and it was DREAMY. I feel like it opened up a whole new world of juices for me.

This week I picked up organic orange peach mango juice and plan to blend it with some organic strawberries for a faux smoothie!

3. My first natural soap success.

I’ve been making concerted efforts to switch to more natural beauty products over the past year, but it’s a long process to find things that are natural, affordable, and adequately replace my previous products. Natural for me means that I can read and understand each of the ingredients. I should have listened to all the beauty gurus sooner, but this week I finally went out and purchased Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap. IT IS PHENOMENAL. It lathers well, is super moisturizing, and smells fantastic. I might even try it on my hair eventually.

4. Creamy Tomato Pasta

This week, for one of my usual high carb dinners, I made gluten free Quinoa Brown Rice pasta from Trader Joes. Rather than topping it with just my usual salt-free diced tomatoes, I thought I would try something new. I got the idea to mix Amy’s Low Sodium Butternut Squash soup with my diced tomatoes, and it made a super creamy sauce! It basically tasted like creamy tomato soup, and I may even try mixing that butternut squash soup with salt free tomato sauce to make my own soup. I never thought of using squash to make things “creamy,” rather than using cream, cashews, or other high fat foods.

5. Everyday Lean

One of the best parts of my week this week was realizing how lean I felt every day despite 5 rest days from the gym. Even though I used to eat a very health whole foods based vegan diet, I often felt after several days off from the gym that I would lose that lean feeling and start to feel rather bloated or puffy – just not my best. Since switching to an 80/10/10 macro breakdown where I get 50-75% of my calories from raw fruits and vegetables and the rest from high carb low fat cooked vegan foods, I can honestly say that I can eat as much as I want whenever I want and still feel AMAZING. Of course, this is one of the biggest benefits this “diet” touts, but I am yet another user who can vouch for its truth. After years of trial and error, I am starting to feel like this is going to be the thing that I might stick with forever, but more on that to come soon!

Well guys, I’ve been battling some sort of weird illness for several days now. I am finally heading to the doctor today to see what it is, but in the meantime, please pardon my lack of blogging. I’ve had a sore throat for 10 days straight now (mild at first, getting worse the last 3 days) and completely zapped energy. I have taken 3 rest days in a row (unheard of for me!), and am planning another one today. Keep your fingers crossed that me sharing multiple food and drink items with a friend who turned out to have mono did not infect me with said mono.

For now, lots of these delicious orange juice, pineapple, mango smoothies are on tap. Wish me luck.
